Carried Memories

Intro

I’ve always been fascinated by how objects, memories, and stories intertwine to shape our identity. This curiosity led me to explore the relationship between people and objects during a module on migration design, with the aim of fostering a new understanding of belongings. Four people, four stories, a journey through cultural identity and lived experience. The Carried Memories project emerged from a desire to examine the complex bond between humans and the objects they hold dear. A theme eloquently captured by Aida Bosch: “Human things [...] are fundamentally and existentially involved in the constitution of identity.” For many with a migration background, these “things” become symbolic bridges between cultural worlds. Through interviews with four individuals of diverse origins, the project reveals how deeply rooted objects, rituals, and memories are in the formation of personal identity.
